ASTM C494 vs EN 934 vs GB/T 8076

These three frameworks classify and test concrete admixtures but use different test cements, mix designs, limit values and conformity procedures. They are not mutually recognised: a Type F high-range water reducer under ASTM C494 must still be tested to EN 934-2 or GB/T 8076 when the contract names those standards.

Where projects actually go wrong

  • Assuming equivalence. Different reference cements and test mixes produce different measured water reduction and slump retention for the same product.
  • Ignoring conformity. EN 934-2 sits inside a conformity/CE framework; ASTM C494 is typically invoked through project specifications; GB/T 8076 interacts with China's marking and type-testing rules.
  • Using an outdated revision. The GB/T 8076 revision published 2025 took effect on 1 August 2026, replacing the 2008 edition and changing the standard from mandatory GB to recommended GB/T. Quoting the old edition in a 2026 contract is a real risk.
  • Forgetting market gates. SABER (Saudi Arabia), REACH (EU) and buyer prequalification sit on top of product standards.

So what should you do?

  1. Write the exact standard, edition and product type into the specification.
  2. Request test reports issued under that standard, from a laboratory acceptable to the buyer.
  3. Re-run acceptance tests on the project cement when the supply source changes.
  4. Check the destination's conformity/registration gate before shipping — see our country reports and Standards & Compliance hub.

Frequently asked questions

Can one test report satisfy all three standards?

No. Reports are issued against a named standard's methods and reference materials. Plan separate testing where the contract or market requires it.

Is GB 8076 or GB/T 8076 the current designation?

The 2025 revision is GB/T 8076 (recommended) and took effect 1 August 2026, replacing GB 8076-2008 (mandatory). Confirm the edition in your contract.

Where can I obtain the official texts?

Chinese national standards are available from the official standards platform; ASTM, EN and JIS texts are copyrighted and must be purchased through official channels. Admixor can provide an English summary of key limits on request.
